I only just got it in under the wire (7 minutes to spare, in fact) but here’s the rough first stab at the new format to mark the Ministry’s first birthday.
Erm…I liked the other one better. This is fine as far as it goes, but it looks like a lot of other sites, whereas the black and fuscia one was distinctive. What’s more, what do I now do with the t-shirt?
For the record I was hoping to put together something clean and minimal, that would dynamically adjust itself to the size of the screen on which it is being viewed, with easier-to-read typefaces and that looked good when accessed on “mobile devices” (as that is, apparently, the way t’Internet is going).
Don’t get me wrong. I don’t dislike this theme and never said so, it’s just that I’m a bit of a conservative and a luddite. The first makes me resistant to change and the second makes me struggle to immediately gauge the advantages of the new format. I am still suitably impressed and hope and trust that the site will go from strength to strength as a result. But if someone asks me whether I prefer rhubarb crumble or lemon meringue pie, I have to answer rhubarb crumble. Actually, that’s a bad example because if I was eating at someone’s house and they had made a lemon meringue pie and I said I preferred the rhubarb crumble they made last time I should deserve an almighty slap…
Domdeplume
There were a number of things that I liked about the old format, too. It was certainly distinctive, pleasingly laid out and looked serious. I shall miss it.
But I like evolution. The chances of me accessing the site on a mobile device within the next thirty years may be as close to nil as dammit, but the new look is altogether more accessible. There were clearly problems when you pushed the envelope with the old format, and if this revamp helps, all the better. Plus my wife prefers it.
And I was starting to worry about the effect that staring at all those various empty black screens might have on the Minister.

Right.

But I’ll, er, get my coat.
I really bloody like this theme.
