Nobody likes a smart arse show-off…
…except the Minister.
One take, one camera, one sickeningly talented musician.
At 2pm tomorrow in Lambeth County Court, the Minister steps up to the advocacy oche for the first time in a decade. How pisspoor is that defence going to be..?
If I escape without being found in contempt of court it’ll count as A Result.
Who he? Not sure how he’s done it – he must have someone operating the sampler and doing the mix for him. Bit of a shame he doesn’t show them doing that bit. Most of the stuff I’ve seen like this is done using a foot pedal sampler, so you can at least appreciate the build up (and know that they are doing it themselves. This: http://youtube.com/watch?v=HtMMc4DNIZ8 is the best example I’ve found. It also features beatboxing flute, which I think is oddly hilarious and cool at the same time.
For a similar example of someone working with nothing, can I dig not too deep in to the canon of Mr Ben Folds? http://youtube.com/watch?v=_56F04LoQD4 catches Mr Ben jamming “Such Great Heights”. The story goes that he forgot he was supposed to do a cover on the tv show, so was listening to this on his mp3 player and threw the percussion etc together from what was lying around – banker’s boxes, wine glasses etc. He gets the synth sound by putting a sheet of foil on the piano strings and then resting his shirt on top.
Considering it was thrown together, it’s a fucking ace tune, and an ace sentiment. He performs it regularly now, but most notably on his MySpace “by request” concert (the first ever done), where he had the backing of his guitorchestra, and expanded the finish to include a full ringtone orchestra. It’s here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=G4v8X_Zi-xY&feature=related.
I’ve been meaning to ask does a SMIP actually have to be “pop” in the sense of “popular”. I only wonder because there is more evidence of the sublime brilliance of Ben Folds I could offer, but the thing I want to nominate has never been committed to vinyl, CD or DVD. It only exists on t’internet. But it is a sublime moment in music.
Good point: I thought the video’s opening captions explained but they don’t.
It’s David Ford performing Go To Hell, the lead US single from his second solo album, Songs For The Road.
The track was also the lead UK single from that album, released last year, and the original Go To Hell video (again one camera, one take) can be found at http://youtube.com/watch?v=RZjXu6uxjAM
No hats were harmed in the making of this video.
I don’t know the technological ins and outs but he does a number of songs live using loop pedals, building the tracks up thus.
The SMIP Rules:
- ideally, though not compulsorily, only one SMIP per artist;
- ideally, though not compulsorily, released as a single;
- one SMIP per song;
- no Rolling Stones.
Bring on Mr. Folds.
What is it with you and this “no Rolling Stones” shit???
